Sidonio De Sousa Bairrada Reserva 2018
You already know and love Sidonio de Sousa’s knockout Bairrada Colheita 2018, a seriously elegant red masquerading as a weeknight-wonder value wine. For us, Sidonio’s wines are like a secret weapon, stealthily out-performing their exceedingly modest price point. Enter the Reserva, yet another notch above and beyond with an excellent quality-to-price ratio. With the same old-vine baga grapes, the reserva receives a bit more care, aging in a combination of cement, steel, and ultimately 100-plus year-old Portuguese oak vats for a period of 18 months, imparting more texture and a richer and more spiced tannin dimension. Whereas the basic colheita is fairly focused on straightforward fruit expression, the reserve is blessed with both richer cherry fruit and a more savory and mineral profile, showing well-integrated elements of graphite, saline, and green pepper. These qualities make it a must-try for fans of right-bank Bordeaux, like Saint-Emilion, or Loire reds such as Saumur-Champigny. Both of Sidonio’s cuvées already have the benefit of 8-years lovingly cellared before release, and the reserve especially is built to last for easily another decade or more.
100% baga. 18 months in 100-plus year-old Portuguese oak barrels. DOC Bairrada, Portugal.
