Ramilo Malvasia Colares 2021

$82.00

The Ramilo Malvasia Colares presents a pale golden amber color, offering a bouquet of almond, pistachio, and orange blossom. The palate shows baked orange zest, more lightly oxidative nutty notes, and oolong tea tannins alongside oceanic minerals. While accessible now, this bottle will continue to develop nicely in the cellar for decades. We recommend decanting and serving closer to cellar temperature, as refrigerator temperature will conceal the great nuance of this rare bottling. While very worthy of contemplation on its own, it will also elevate a spread of cheeses, conservas, or comforting dishes such as stewed rabbit or a roast turkey.

Colares remains a fascination among wine connoisseurs for its exceptionally age-worthy wines grown on ancient pre-phylloxera vines. Yields are very low and vineyard management is quite labour-intensive on the low-lying vines which grow in sandy soils. The sandy terroir, while presenting a formidable challenge to winemakers, is actually responsible for protecting these vines when phylloxera was ravaging most vines across Europe. The few winemakers producing here have proven an authentic love of wine as their motivation, resisting strong economic incentive to use the seaside property for lucrative vacation-home development.

Organic. 100% malvasia de colares. 50% fermented on the skins, 50% without, then combined and aged 18 months in old French oak. Colares, Sintra, Portugal.
