Radikon "Jakot" 2019 500mL
The iconic Radikon family of the Italian-Slovenian borderlands have been farming the the land since the 1860's and making organic wines since the early 1990's. Their Blue line of wines represents their highest effort, highest craft, and most aged wines, requiring no added sulfites for stability thanks to their extended time on the skins. Blue line wines are bottled in specially designed bottles with a narrow neck and thinner cork, either in 500mL or full liter size. The sizing is due to founder Stanko Radikon’s belief that 500mL of wine was the minimum amount needed to pair with one person’s dinner, and a full liter was needed for dinner for two. We like his style!
“Jakot” is a backwards spelling of tokaj (aka tokaji), indicating a different treatment of the varietal than the classic aromatic and sweet dessert wine. In the capable hands at Radikon, the tokaj grapes are crushed and fermented on the skins for two to three months, then the wine is aged three years in huge old oak barrels, and finally aged at least another year in the bottle prior to release. The result is a dry and savory orange wine of limitless depth and nuance offering layers and layers of depth and nuance for pleasurable contemplation. Notes of dried orange zest, chanterelle, barley honey, and tea tannins are really just the tip of the iceberg! We appreciate it on its own, as well as with a versatile range of pairings from a simple spread of olives and sardines to a bouilliabaise or cioppino. The 2019’s are showing well, especially with a bit of air, served around 55-60 degrees, but these treasures will last decades in the cellar if you have the self-restraint to keep them around!
Practicing organic. 100% tocai friulano. Minimum 25 year-old vines. Unfined and unfiltered. No added sulfites. 2-3 months on the skins, three years in neutral oak, minimum one year aging in bottle. Venezia-Giulia, Italy. 500mL format.
