L'Aventure "Estate Cuvée 20th Anniversary" 2021
Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure was trained in Burgundy and developed his skills and reputation in Bordeaux, but landed in Paso Robles after a world-wide search for a new horizon-expanding terroir where he could freely assemble blends outside the strictures of traditional Bordeaux winemaking. The superb 2021 Estate Cuvée marks the milestone of the 20th vintage of his wild, boundary-breaking Paso Robles blend. Bringing together the heritage of Bordeaux, with cabernet sauvignon and petite verdot, and the northern Rhone with syrah, this cuvée is assembled, or cherry-picked really, from the estate’s best fruit. The result is a rare balance of power and elegance with layered violet, graphite, blackberry fruit, and super-fine tannins that earned the very rare rating of 100/100 (!) from critic Jeb Dunnuck. In 2025, this stunner is entering its drinking window and showing nicely but it will cellar nicely for another decade or two.
50% syrah, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 20% petit verdot. Aged in 80% new French oak. Unfiltered and unfined. Willow Creek District, Paso Robles, California.
