La Rural Moscatel D'Alexandria 2024
Brothers Andreu and Xavi Padró of La Rural are making some of the most widely appealing wines in the increasingly busy space of Spanish natural wine making. We have been consistently impressed by their easy-to-love wines, each made in a purist minimal intervention method yet offered at an exceptional value.
Their muscatel d’alexandria is frankly the most impressive we’ve encountered of this tricky varietal which tends toward bloomy floral and fruit notes. Many vignerons try to tame that expression with long skin contact, adding tannin to reign in that explosive lushness. By contrast, La Rural keeps things light, breezy, and balanced while staying true to the floral and tropical character of the grape. Opening with a wallop of floral aromatics, it gives the impression of entering a botanical garden brimming with exotic flowers. Then a second wave of aromas hits: cantaloupe and passion fruit, plus salt air and petrichor. The palate delivers on all that bold aroma, adding pineapple and papaya to the mix along with a hit of clementine. The citrus and mineral elements increase on the vibrant finish, keeping things fresh, crisp, and eminently drinkable. This one is essentially springtime in a bottle, and we’ll be hanging onto some to add some cheer during winter, when sunlight and fresh flowers are scarce!
Practicing organic. 100% moscatel d’alexandria. 5 year-old vines. 12 days carbonic maceration, 2 days maceration on the skins, before 10 months rest in stainless steel tank. Unfined, unfiltered. Zero added sulfites.
