Hervé Souhaut, Romaneaux-Destezet, Clos des Cessieux 2022
Hervé Souhaut crafts this stunning red from 50 to 100 year-old syrah vines in the heart of Saint-Joseph. The nose is a progressive showcase of airy violet, plum blossom subtly inflected with fennel, rosemary, and eucalyptus. The classic Northern-Rhone brooding dark berries and bacon-fat meatiness appear in a dynamic balance along with firm berry and plum, black olive, and pomegranate. The vibrant and lingering finish brings gently spiced tannin, lip-smacking tart raspberry, and crystalline mineral. This is compelling bottle for the table offering plenty to contemplate while elevating hearty roasted vegetables, lamb, or well-seasoned poultry.
Unlike many northern Rhone reds, 20 years in the cellar is not a requirement, as its Souhaut’s intention to offer something less tannic, and more fruit and flower driven. Clos des Cessieux is already a joyful and accessible treasure now.
Practicing organic and biodynamic. 100% syrah. 8 weeks aging in old Burgundy barrels. Clos Les Cessieux vineyard, Saint-Joseph, Ardeche, Rhone, France.
