Emilie Mutombo "ULE" Ull de Llebre 2023
Emilie Mutombo’s wines have an enthralling quality of balance and poise, each possessed of so much integrity and depth, never becoming angular or aggressive. There is great integrity, discretion, and poetic interiority to each bottling. In a world where winemakers often veer towards an attention-seeking showiness, this chic sense of restraint is incredibly refreshing, just like the juice itself!
ULE is a bottling of ull de llebre, the tempranillo sub-varietal that’s rarely spotted but gained a bit more visibility thanks to Mutombo’s former mentors at Partida Creus. Like all her bottlings, the ULE presents as a purist fruit-driven gem, modest at first, yet offering depth, polish, and flawless refreshment. Lighter bodied and leading with plum and fig notes, this one is for lovers of lighter reds such as gamay, pinot noir, freisa, or counoise. Its nowhere near the boozy tannic expressions of tempranillo, but also avoids the acidic excesses of so much of the glou-glou reds omnipresent in the natural wine scene. It slowed us down and really put us in-the-moment with its marked subtlety, poise, and balance.
Emilie Mutombo started in the world of wine at the prestigious, if conventional, Chene Bleu in Gigondas, after leaving her hometown of Brussels. Soon after she scored an apprenticeship with Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori of Partida Creus, branching out and bottling her own first vintage in 2017. The artist behind the striking abstractions on each of her labels is her brother, Frederic.
Certified organic. 100% Ull de Llebre, a sub-varietal of tempranillo. 50 year-old vines. 70% direct pressed and 30% kept whole berry and infused into the pressed juice. Rested 10 months in stainless steel tank before bottling. Unfined and unfiltered. Zero added sulfites. Bonastre, Baix Penedes, Spain.
