Emilie Mutombo "MC" Macabeo 2023

$49.00

Emilie Mutombo’s wines have an enthralling quality of balance and poise, each possessed of so much integrity and depth, never becoming angular or aggressive. There is great integrity, discretion, and poetic interiority to each bottling. In a world where winemakers often veer towards an attention-seeking showiness, this chic sense of restraint is incredibly refreshing, as is the juice itself!

Her MC macabeo starts off with flowering tree aromas, like honeysuckle, apple, and pear blossoms struck by sun and carried along a soft breeze with just a hint of Mediterranean salt air along for the ride. The palate is defined by a subtly rounded texture, showing just-under-ripe cantaloupe, asian pear, and a hint of Persian cucumber. The finish offers a gentle bit of structure, with a sandy-salty minerality, pinches of white tea tannin and pithy citrus, along with an elusive note of candied ginger. On the whole, this one delivers clean purist refreshment and contemplative depths in the same moment.

Emilie Mutombo started in the world of wine at the prestigious, if conventional, Chene Bleu in Gigondas, after leaving her hometown of Brussels. Soon after she scored an apprenticeship with Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori of Partida Creus, branching out and bottling her own first vintage in 2017.

Certified organic. 100% macabeo. Brief maceration before pressing. Rested 10 months in stainless steel tank before bottling. Unfined and unfiltered. Zero added sulfites. Bonastre, Baix Penedes, Spain.
