Emilie Mutombo "Cuvée Bruxelles" 2024
Emilie Mutombo’s wines have an enthralling quality of balance and poise, each possessed of so much integrity and depth, never becoming angular or aggressive. There is great integrity, discretion, and poetic interiority to each bottling. In a world where winemakers often veer towards an attention-seeking showiness, this chic sense of restraint is incredibly refreshing, as is the juice itself!
“Cuvée Bruxelles” is an homage to the place where Mutombo’s wine journey started, the bars of her hometown of Brussels, Belgium. This cuvée is 100% syrah, quite unusual in her new home in the south of Spain. We at Fog Wine Shop are total syrah-worshippers, and Mutombo’s offering goes toe-to-toe with our Northern Rhone syrah makers, particularly reminding us of house favorite Matthieu Barret. Enticing from the first moment, blackberry, blueberry, violet, and lavender notes dance from the glass, accented with savory herbal garrigue and a whiff of pastille. The palate continues the effusive fruit profile, expanding on the blue fruits with a touch of plum and a bright strawberry element. While fruit and flower is the main event, there are also lovely details like graphite and wood-ash minerality and a gentle clasp of light and bouncy spice-inflected tannins. While its a bit more extroverted than other offerings, Cuvée Bruxelles maintains Mutombo’s signature approach, remaining breezy, light, and low-abv, while simultaneously showing great sophistication and subtlety.
Emilie Mutombo started in the world of wine at the prestigious, if conventional, Chene Bleu in Gigondas, after leaving her hometown of Brussels. Soon after she scored an apprenticeship with Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori of Partida Creus, branching out and bottling her own first vintage in 2017.
Certified organic. 100% syrah. 30 year-old vines. Carbonic maceration. Unfined and unfiltered. Zero added sulfites. Bonastre, Baix Penedes, Spain.
