Domaine du Pélican Arbois Savagnin Ouillé "Grand Curoulet" 2023

$95.00

Savagnin, grown exclusively in the Jura, is a rarely spotted varietal, and even more rarely vinfied on its own, rather than blended with chardonnay. If it is on its own, it is typically vinified oxidative style into a vin jaune. So, to find a 100% savagnin crafted in the non-oxidative ouillé style is a rare opportunity to experience this rare grape on its own terms, so to speak. Furthermore, this bottling is from the historic Grand Curoulet parcel, considered to be one the most desirable terroirs in Arbois. Wildflowers, almond, melon, citrus zest, subtle baking spice, and flinty minerality are all present, but really it is the overall structure, balanced and finesse that leaves a lasting impression.

Guillaume d’Angerville of Domaine du Pelican describes the terroir and gives us a bit about the winemaking: “Grand Curoulet is one of the very best terroirs of Arbois. It is a North-facing parcel located on the side of a hill that dominates Arbois and the plaine de la Saône. Grand Curoulet is also believed to be where the first vines of Arbois were planted. Due to its North facing exposition and windy location, Grand Curoulet usually matures later than the other terroirs of Domaine du Pélican. At harvest, the grapes are lightly crushed before being pressed and fermentation is in foudres and barrels. One third of the crop macerates on the skins for one night before being pressed. Aging is in 500L barrels with no new oak.”

Practicing biodynamic. 100% savagnin. Grand Curoulet, Arbois, Jura, France.
