Daniel Ramos "El Altar" Garnacha 2018
This bottle nails a tricky balance between fruit-driven purity and a burly full-bodied profile. Winemaker Daniel Ramos adds 2% of the white varietal chelva to the red garnacha, a strategy that adds lift to the rich ripe red, much like that pinch of viognier often added in a Northern Rhone syrah. We absolutely love this approach, especially on cold winter nights. The warmth of a higher abv and a baking spice laced palate are welcome influences enhancing the elegant fruit profile: layers of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, and pomegranate. Saturated violet and hibiscus aromatics, a backbone of smoky minerals, and velvety tannins around the edges complete the picture.
Organic. 98% garnacha, 2% chelva. 65-100 year-old vines. 1 year in French oak. Unfined and unfiltered. Only 6mg of sulfites added at bottling. El Barraco, Zerberos , Gredos, Castilla y Leon, Spain.
