Anne & Francois Ganevat "Cuveé Madelon"

$60.00

Even among our selection of small-production hard-to-find winemakers here at Fog Wine Shop, the Ganevats truly stand out both in accomplishment and rarity. Jura-based siblings Anne and Francois Ganevat trace their family’s history in winemaking back to the 1650s. They are known for rigorous vineyard work, organically and biodynamically farming a wide selection of varietals on a mere 8.5 hectares around the tiny hamlet of Rotalier, both iconic Jura varietals like savagnin and poulsard, but also several scarcely seen indigenous varietals which were preserved by their father when other vignerons were ripping them out and replanting with chardonnay. In the cellar they are quite painstaking, using a variety of élévage techniques to develop a wide variety of bottlings, each requiring a unique approach. Francois Ganevat worked seven years under his father, then worked as cellarmaster for Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet before returning to the family vines in the Jura, combining centuries of family know-how with training in one of Burgundy’s most esteemed houses. The cuvée Madelon blends gamay with a secret mix of rare indigenous Jura varietals, crafting a fruity-funky natural red par excellence. Red berry fruit notes predominate, supported by herb and spice notes, a whiff of smoke, and very little tannin to get in the way. The refreshing acidity and the earthy support notes suggest this one will do well at the table… We’re thinking saucisson sec, gruyere, and chèvre for a start….

Practicing organic and biodynamic. Gamay and an undisclosed mix of indigenous Jura varietals. Unfined and unfiltered. Zero added sulfites. Non-Vintage. Vin de France. La Combe, Rotalier, Arbois, Jura, France.
