Even among our selection of small-production hard-to-find winemakers here at Fog Wine Shop, the Ganevats truly stand out both in accomplishment and rarity. Jura-based siblings Anne and Francois Ganevat trace their family’s history in winemaking back to the 1650s. They are known for rigorous vineyard work, organically and biodynamically farming a wide selection of varietals on a mere 8.5 hectares around the tiny hamlet of Rotalier, both iconic Jura varietals like savagnin and poulsard, but also several scarcely seen indigenous varietals which were preserved by their father when other vignerons were ripping them out and replanting with chardonnay. In the cellar they are quite painstaking, using a variety of élévage techniques to develop a wide variety of bottlings, each requiring a unique approach. Francois Ganevat worked seven years under his father, then worked as cellarmaster for Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet before returning to the family vines in the Jura. The Le Clos bottling bears the mark of both influences. Savagnin is an iconic only-in-Jura varietal, but in the ouillé style, rather than the oxidative sous voile style, it bears a Burgundian fruit-driven elegance.

Practicing organic and biodynamic. 100% savagnin. Unfined and unfiltered. Zero added sulfites. Le Clos vineyard, La Combe, Rotalier, Arbois, Jura, France.
