Anders Frederik Steen "Go Visit Nature Before It Is Too Late" 2022
After serving as sommelier at Noma, Copenhagen, then opening Manfreds and Relae, Anders Frederik Steen left his native Denmark for the Ardeche, Northern Rhone, in 2013. True to his avant-garde and purist restaurant origins, his wine-making approach is free and unencumbered by traditions and conventions, continually responding to each vintage with a new and unique approach. Rather than seeking to repeat a successful formula, he never makes the same wine twice, so each year brings a new set of evocatively named cuvées. That said there’s a clear through line to his approach, working exclusively with organic and biodynamically farmed grapes, and using absolutely no added sulfites at any stage in winemaking or bottling. He also is known for pressing grapes with “the pressure of a handshake”, and this slighter touch is produces wines of buoyancy, transparency, depth and precision.
“Go Visit Nature Before It Is Too Late” is 100% Viognier, as you’ve never experienced it before. His lighter-touch approach yields a wonderfully nuanced and quaffable expression of the classic Northern Rhone varietal. From first splash, it reads as ultra-clean health-food wine, and will please fans of Matassa, Christian Tschida, or Partida Creus. Subtle and ethereal aromas ranging from wildflowers and citrus zest to subtle ginger and dried pineapple begin the journey. Soft and discreet fruit notes dance nimbly on the palate; pineapple, peach, nectarine, and cantaloupe all making appearances. The wine culminates in a finish that’s absolutely alive and humming, lengthened with mixed citrus and just-kissed with sea salt. The impression is summery and effortlessly graceful, remaining devoid of flashiness or ostentation. Nothing is missing and nothing is in excess!
Ecocert-certified organic. 100% Viognier. Unfined, unfiltered. Zero added sulfites. Valvignères, Ardèche, Northern Rhone Valley, France.
