Anders Frederik Steen "Flickering Through My Naked Thoughts" 2023 1.5L Magnum

$120.00

After serving as sommelier at Noma, Copenhagen, then opening Manfreds and Relae, Anders Frederik Steen left his native Denmark for the Ardeche, Northern Rhone, in 2013. True to his avant-garde and purist restaurant origins, his wine-making approach is free and unencumbered by traditions and conventions, continually responding to each vintage with a new and unique approach. Rather than seeking to repeat a successful formula, he never makes the same wine twice, so each year brings a new set of evocatively named cuvées. That said there’s a clear through line to his approach, working exclusively with organic and biodynamically farmed grapes, and using absolutely no added sulfites at any stage in winemaking or bottling. He also is known for pressing grapes with “the pressure of a handshake”, and this slighter touch is produces wines of buoyancy, transparency, depth and precision.

"Flickering Through My Naked Thoughts" is a distinctive take on classic Rhone varietals, namely grenache noir and cinsault. The grapes were de-stemmed, then had a long slow maceration before then resting a year in old French barriques before bottling. The result is a lighter and more buoyant red that nonetheless has the complexity of a more conventional higher-tannin Rhone red.

Ecocert-certified organic. Grenache noir and cinsault. One year in neutral French barriques. Unfined, unfiltered. Zero added sulfites. Valvignères, Ardèche, Northern Rhone Valley, France.
